A document containing the names of more than two dozen members of the U.S. House of Representatives who are being scrutinized for conduct violations is starting to get widely distributed over the Internet after being leaked on a peer-to-peer network earlier this week.

Tiversa Inc., a Cranberry Township, Penn.-based company that offers a P2P network monitoring service said that since news of the leak broke earlier this week it has seen the file at multiple locations including London, Toronto, Washington, Los Angeles, Texas and New York.

"Since this story broke we have been investigating and [have] confirmed that the file is available on P2P networks," said Scott Harrer, brand director for Tiversa.

The Washington Post on Thursday said that it had obtained a document listing the names of dozens of House members who are being scrutinized by ethics investigators for activities related to defense lobbying and influence peddling. The confidential document was prepared in July by the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, which is also called the Ethics Committee.

Facebook was awarded $711 million in damages from a convicted spammer on Thursday, but the social networking site is hoping a separate criminal action will eventually send him to jail.

Sanford Wallace was sued by Facebook in February along with Adam Arzoomanian and Scott Shaw for allegedly obtaining the login credentials for accounts. The accounts were then used to send spam to those users' friends starting around November 2008.

The spam either linked to other phishing sites that sought to collect more Facebook account credentials or linked to other commercial Web sites that paid spammers for referrals.

Microsoft is spiking its Office Accounting software and will stop distributing the products as of Nov. 16, according to a posting on the company's Web site.

The product had outlived its usefulness, according to an FAQ.

"We continually evaluate our business strategies to make sure we're working to meet the needs of customers, partners and shareholders. With that in mind, we have determined that existing free templates within Office used with Excel was a better option for small businesses, and the Microsoft Dynamics ERP products were appropriate for mid-range organizations," it states.

Office Accounting users will continue to receive support under the original terms, which provide five years of mainstream support and five years of extended support following the product's release. Specific retirement dates are listed on Microsoft's Web site.

However, certain online services, such as eBay and Equifax tie-ins, will no longer be available as of Dec. 15. Customers who bought the software recently have a potential out, as they can return the software within 30 days of purchase.

Microsoft's announcement didn't cite flagging sales as contributing to its decision. But the company has long struggled to compete against rival Intuit's products, which include the popular Quicken accounting application. Earlier this year, Microsoft announced it would stop selling its Money personal-finance software.
